What is a Timing Belt?

Keeping your engine maintained is crucial to keeping your car on the road. Although somewhat uncommon, a broken timing belt can be one of the bigger repairs that a car owner will face. That is why our team at Bowman Auto Center want to be sure you know some basic background on timing belts.

The main purpose of a timing belt is to ensure the cam shaft and crankshaft in your vehicle keep firing at normal rates. Without the timing belt, the engine would soon stall and your car would be headed nowhere fast. Unfortunately, because a timing belt is a mechanical part, it will wear out after some time. Eventually, the teeth that hold the belt or chain together may stretch or, in extreme cases, break altogether. Experts suggest that a timing belt can last up to 100,000 miles but of course this depends on how hard a particular car is pushed over time.
